Services

Design that serves.

A nonprofit design studio for health, civic life and small business. Clear, usable work for the people who depend on it.

Where we focus

Three focus areas.

We focus here because this is where design most decides whether people get what they need. We take on work outside these areas too.

Health and biomedicine

Care people can understand.

Clinics, research groups, health nonprofits and the people building tools for care. Design decides whether a patient understands their care.

Civic life

Rules people can follow.

Public agencies, policy groups and community organizations. Design decides whether a resident can finish a form or follow a new rule.

Entrepreneurs and small business

Places people come back to.

Founders and the locally owned places a neighborhood depends on. Design decides whether people find them, trust them and return.

What we do

Design, where it’s rarely used.

Alongside the work you expect from a design studio, we bring design to policy and to the way projects run.

Branding, marketing and communications

Be known for what you do.

Identities, logos, websites, campaigns and the everyday materials an organization uses to reach people.

Policy research and guides

Make the rules usable.

Research, tools and guides that make rules and services easier to follow, from patient guidelines to accessibility standards for digital communications.

Project, product and process

Keep the work moving.

Tools and guides that help teams plan and run their work, from research organizers to how a project goes from idea to launch.

What we make

We help all sorts of clients with all sorts of work. Here are some of the things we make.

How we work

One price, set before we start.

1

fixed quote

We estimate the work and quote one number before anything starts. Ask, and we’ll quote.

0%

markup on outside costs

Printing, fonts, stock images and hosting pass through at cost, or you pay the vendor directly.

Every fee

goes further

Client work funds design for our community partners, organizations that couldn’t otherwise afford it.

Service grants

Can’t afford design? Ask for a grant.

If your organization serves the public and can’t pay for design, a service grant covers part or all of our fee for one project. Grant recipients become community partners, with the same team and the same quality as any client.

01

Request

Tell us who you are and what you need.

02

Quote

We price the work the way we would for any client.

03

Grant

We set how much of the fee it covers, in dollars, from a discount to all of it. It covers our service, not outside costs such as printing or hosting.

04

Answer

We answer requests as they arrive. If our hours are full, the answer can be a yes with a later start date.

What we weigh

Each request is a judgment call, with no scores or cutoffs.

  • Need: how much your current design holds you back, and whether you could pay for help.
  • Community role: what your organization means to the people it serves.
  • Fit: whether the work is in health and biomedicine, civic life, or entrepreneurship and small business.
  • Learning value: interns do most grant work under our founder’s review, so every grant is also training.
  • Capacity: how many hours we have at the time.
